Oriel y Parc painting and photography competition

John Piper inspires landscape and photography competition

If you’re an artist or photographer inspired by the Pembrokeshire landscape, your work could feature in a dedicated exhibition at Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre next year.

The Friends of Oriel y Parc are holding a competition on Saturday 8thSeptember for landscape artists and photographers to spend a day in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park capturing the spectacular scenery.

Speaking of the event, Oriel y Parc Manager Paula Ellis said: “The competition was inspired by Oriel y Parc’s current Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales exhibition, John Piper: The Mountains of Wales and we’re really hoping it will fuel everyone’s imagination. There’s also a fantastic prize on offer”.

All entries will be displayed at Oriel y Parc in 2013. The winning artist and the winning photographer will be awarded the opportunity to have a dedicated exhibition of a small body of their work in the Tower of Oriel y Parc in 2013. The winners will also receive a complimentary art workshop in 2013.

The competition will begin at 10.30am at Garn Fawr Car Park, Strumble Head, which can be reached by car or the Strumble Shuttle coastal bus, which leaves Oriel y Parc car park at 9.05am daily.

Rod Williams, from Friends of Oriel y Parc and an art enthusiast will be there to meet people and will be available throughout the day for advice and tuition.

Rod will be joined by National Park Ranger, Ian Meopham, who will be leading a one hour optional guided walk of the area, including Garn Fawr and Garn Fechan. The walk will also pass by the cottage previously owned by John Piper, which was used as a retreat and studio by the artist in the 1960s.

Completed paintings must be returned to the Discovery Room at Oriel y Parc for entry in the competition by 4pm on Sunday 9thSeptember. Photographs should be delivered to Oriel y Parc by Monday 17thSeptember.

The artwork will be judged by public vote throughout the following week and the winners of both categories will be announced on Saturday 15thSeptember at 12 midday in Oriel y Parc’s Discovery Room.

Entry to the competition is £2 per person and advance booking is essential on 01437 720392.
